Medicare is a government program to help people with health care needs. It has two parts to the program: A & B!

  • A is obtained by working over 10 years (or a spouse); can be paid for later, depending on reason.
  • B is obtained by paying a monthly fee; can be waived if on Low Income Subsidy, on Medicaid (depending on level), get plan that helps with coverage, or be employed where they cover the drug costs. If you don’t accept B when first offered, you may have to pay a penalty; again, depending on circumstances.
  • Part C covers part A and B; including some other benefits. These are: Medicare advantage plans; Medicare Supplement plans. You cannot have both of these together. Must have the part A and B for either.
  • Part D is drug plans. Can purchase this with original Medicare; usually part of Advantage plans; has to purchase separately for Supplement plans. Basically, have A and B.

The downside is the original medicare does not cover Vision, dental, hearing; and, has large deductible for going to the hospital. If have Medicaid, you can get a plan that combines Medicare and Medicaid (Dual eligible). There are special plans for both enrolling; and, coverage: Diabetes: Heart and lung problems; ESRD (end stage renal disease). Also, if in care homes; frail; and, others.
